Our Hedgehog Care

Hedgehogs are complex little creatures who require very specialist care.
Deanshanger Hedgehog Rescue is highly experienced in hedgehog health, welfare and rehabilitation. Here are just some of the areas / care that our team provide.

Critical care
We provide critical care for hedgehogs arriving in distress, including warmth through controlled incubators, rehydration with appropriate fluids, and essential first aid. We stabilise hypothermic, dehydrated, or shocked hedgehogs quickly so they have the best possible chance of recovery before further treatment.

Parasite Treatment
We diagnose and treat internal parasites such as roundworm, lungworm, and fluke, which are common in wild hedgehogs. We use carefully selected medications and supportive care to reduce parasite burdens safely, particularly in weakened animals that require a cautious treatment approach.

Injury assessment & care
We safely and calmly handle hedgehogs, using experienced techniques to encourage them to unball for thorough examination. We assess hidden injuries, fractures, and signs of illness that are not immediately visible, ensuring each hedgehog receives an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care plan.

Wound management
We treat a wide range of wounds, from minor injuries to complex trauma cases, supporting healing through cleaning, giving antibiotics where needed, and ongoing monitoring. We provide appropriate pain relief and manage abscesses with drainage and medication to promote effective recovery and comfort.

Hoglet care
Orphaned hoglets require specialist care, including regular feeding, warmth, hydration, and close monitoring during development. Careful hand-rearing helps young hedgehogs grow strong enough to develop natural behaviours and eventually return safely to the wild.

Ringworm /Mange
Skin conditions such as ringworm and mange are assessed and treated with appropriate antifungal or antiparasitic medication alongside supportive care. Early treatment helps improve comfort, restore skin condition, and reduce the risk of further complications or spread.
