A Prickly-manoeuvre

Help build our new rescue unit

For years, Deanshanger Hedgehog Rescue has run from the home of founders Dominic and Rachel Matthews, operating out of two sheds—small but mighty! However, with more hedgehogs needing help than ever, it’s time to take the next step and build a dedicated space to care for our spiky friends.
Welcome to the launch of "A Prickly-manoeuvre!

Over 250 Hedgehogs admitted last year!

Our native hedgehogs are sadly still classified as “Vulnerable to Extinction” on the Mammals Society Red List. Every hedgehog we rescue is one step towards changing this! But they are having a difficult time - many arrive suffering from wounds e.g. from garden strimmers, infections, flystrike, dehydration, and other life-threatening conditions. Despite our best efforts to care for all hedgehogs needing help, our current space of two 8x10 sheds, and 3 hutches —is no longer enough to meet the growing demand.

In our busiest season (June – October) we are often full to capacity…but the phone rings and we know that there is another hedgehog in desperate need of help! Of course we always try our very best to get it to another rescue or knowledgeable vet, however this often takes time – something that a poorly hedgehog often doesn’t have! Combine this with more travelling, further stress and delaying treatment. Some sadly can’t fight for long enough.

To never turn a struggling

hedgehog away because we are full.

Our dream?

We have found some land to lease but we desperately need help funding a new Hogspital.

What's planned?

  • A new rescue unit of 12 x 4m (like that in the picture) that will provide us with:
A small reception area - to book in patients without disturbing those recovering.
Larger rehabilitation room - this room will enable us to double our current capacity.

  • Larger ICU room - the hub of the rescue where vital first aid and critical care takes place. This larger area will enable us to have more ICU incubators and also a neonatal ward for hoglets (baby hedgehogs).
