For years, Deanshanger Hedgehog Rescue has run from the home of founders Dominic and Rachel Matthews, operating out of two sheds—small but mighty! However, with more hedgehogs needing help than ever, it’s time to take the next step and build a dedicated space to care for our spiky friends.
Welcome to the launch of "A Prickly Maneuver!
Over 250 Hedgehogs admitted last year!
Hedgehogs are still on the Mammal Society Red List, classified as Vulnerable to extinction.
At Deanshanger Hedgehog Rescue, we provide critical care, first aid, and rehabilitation, with the ultimate goal of releasing these precious animals back into the wild.
With numbers rising every year, we urgently need more capacity to help!
Our current setup struggles during peak months (June–October).
We simply don’t have enough accommodation to care for every hedgehog in need.
That’s why we’re launching "A Prickly Manoeuvre"—a campaign to build a brand-new Hedgehog Rescue Unit that will more than double our capacity and allow us to save even more hedgehogs!
Our Vision
Our new rescue unit designed by a local business Composite Garden Buildings will measure approximately 8000 x 4000mm and will provide us with:

A small reception area - to book in patients without disturbing those recovering.

Larger rehabilitation room - this room will enable us the house more hedgehogs during their rehabilitation.

Larger ICU room - the hub of the rescue where vital first aid and critical care takes place. This larger area will enable us to have more ICU incubators and care areas.
